Chenille is the varsity classic — raised yarn loops on a felt base, the construction behind every letterman letter since the 1930s. It's also the patch type with the most misunderstood limits: it does bold shapes beautifully and fine detail not at all. Here are our real 2026 prices and the actual production specifications, published so you can check your design against them before you order.

What chenille costs in 2026

From-price at volume: $1.30 per piece at 2×2 inches, 1,000 pieces. That is all-in — free worldwide shipping, no setup or digitizing fees, and no tariffs or duties on arrival (DDP). Worth comparing like for like: many published patch prices exclude shipping, backing or setup. Smaller orders cost more per piece — here are our live fixed-price packs for standard sizes (under 4 inches):

PackQuantityPricePer piece
Starter25$175$7.00
Team50$250$5.00
Club100$350$3.50

Large-format chenille (12-inch, the back-patch class):

PackQuantityPricePer piece
Small Run25$500$20.00
Standard50$850$17.00
Team Order100$1,400$14.00

Custom sizes and quantities price through the calculator; minimum order is

5 pieces — same materials and guarantee as a 1,000-piece run. No setup, digitizing, or mold fees on any order. Individual chenille letters (for letterman jackets) are quoted per letter — see the placement guide for how teams typically order them.

The design specs that decide whether your art works in chenille

These are our confirmed production limits — the same numbers our design team checks your mockup against:

SpecificationChenille
Minimum text height12 mm
Minimum line weight3 mm (3–4 mm recommended)
Maximum standard colors3 yarn colors + base
GradientsDo not reproduce
Minimum standalone letter2 in tall (3 in+ recommended)
Maximum auto-priced size14 in
Maximum manufacturable size25 in (larger sizes by quote)
BaseStructural felt/twill, standard finished edge included
Twill borderOptional (satin-stitched or merrowed available)

What this means in practice: chenille is a bold-shapes medium. Letters, numbers, mascot silhouettes, shapes with thick outlines — perfect. Small text, thin lines, photographic art, gradients — that's embroidery or printed territory (embroidered text works down to 4mm; printed reproduces gradients fully). If your design mixes both, the classic answer is a chenille base with embroidered details on top — the standard construction of high-end varsity patches.

Why all 50 patches match — and why that doesn't cost you more

Much of the chenille industry still runs hand-guided chenille machines: an operator steers the needle by hand for every loop path. Two things follow from that. First, no two patches come out identical — on a 50-piece order, there are visible differences across all 50, because each one was steered by hand. Second, light yarn colors suffer: white in particular comes out uneven and messy on manual equipment (grey usually survives; white rarely does).

Panda Patches runs digitally controlled chenille machines. The loop path is programmed once from your approved mockup, so piece #1 and piece

#50 are the same patch — same loop density, same edges, same details. It's also what lets us hold the finest details chenille can physically carry (our 12mm text and 2-inch letter minimums are machine-precision numbers; hand-guided work can't hold them consistently), and it's why white and pastel yarns come out clean and even instead of patchy.

Here is the part that usually surprises people: on the pack sizes most teams actually buy, that precision does not carry a premium. We benchmarked our chenille packs against every competitor publishing chenille prices in September 2026: at 4 inches and 50 pieces we came in 12% below the median, and at 100 pieces 10% below.

So if a quote does come in under ours, the machine is worth asking about. Hand-guided production is cheaper to run, and consistency across the run is what you give up for it. The question to put to another supplier is not whether they are cheaper. It is: *will all 50 patches be identical?* On a team's letterman jackets, the difference is visible from across the room.

Why yarn count matters

Three yarn colors plus the base sounds limiting; it's the aesthetic. The fuzz of chenille comes from looped yarn, and each color is a separate run of loops. Designs that respect the limit look intentional and premium; designs that fight it look like a compromise. Bring us a 6-color logo and we'll recommend which three colors carry it — or which parts should switch to embroidery.

Sizes: from cap patches to back pieces

The calculator prices chenille instantly up to 14 inches. We manufacture up to 25 inches; between those two figures we quote rather than auto-price, because at that scale cost follows design complexity rather than area. Given that 61% of chenille orders are 12 inches or larger, a quote is the normal path for this patch type, not an exception.

Our own order records show chenille runs large, and by a wide margin. Across every chenille order we have sized, 61% are 12 inches or larger and 82% are 8 inches or larger. Only 7% sit in the 2–5 inch band that accounts for the majority of our patch orders overall.

Finished sizeShare of chenille orders
2–5 in7%
5–8 in11%
8–12 in20%
**12 in and above****61%**

That is close to the inverse of our order book as a whole, where 2–5 inches is the largest band. Chenille is bought as a statement piece — jacket backs, arched school names, big mascots — not as a chest logo. Worth knowing before you size your artwork: design for the back panel first.

Timeline for varsity season

Digital mockup in 12–24 hours, unlimited revisions, production 7–10 business days after your written approval, free tracked shipping. Rush service puts qualifying orders in hand in as fast as 5 business days. For fall jacket assembly, order chenille pieces 3–4 weeks before you need finished jackets — patches arrive, then your jacket supplier or tailor needs sewing time.

Frequently Asked Questions

From $1.30/piece at 2×2 inches and 1,000 pieces; $7.00/piece in a 25-piece starter pack; large 12-inch pieces from $14–20/piece depending on quantity. Minimum order 5 pieces.

Text needs 12mm minimum height in chenille. Smaller text should be embroidered — often as embroidered detail on a chenille base.

Up to 3 yarn colors plus the base as standard. Gradients don't reproduce in chenille.

25 inches. The calculator prices up to 14 inches instantly; above that we quote, because cost follows design complexity rather than area at that size.

Equipment. Hand-guided chenille machines are cheaper to run but produce visible piece-to-piece variation (all 50 patches in an order differ) and struggle with light colors, especially white. Digitally controlled machines — what we use — make every piece in a run identical, hold fine detail, and render white and pastel yarns cleanly. You're paying for consistency.

Yes — our chenille is made on digitally controlled machines from one programmed loop path, so every piece in the run is identical. This is not true of hand-guided chenille, where each piece is steered manually.

Both, and iron-on is the more common choice — 91% of our chenille orders ship with iron-on backing. It presses at 350°F for 20–30 seconds from behind only, with no adhesive spray: direct heat on the pile flattens and scorches it. For letterman jackets that will be worn for decades we still recommend sew-on, because a sewn patch can be repositioned by a tailor.
