For leather jackets, iron-on backing does not work — heat from an iron can crack or discolor leather. Sew-on patches are the correct choice for leather application, using a leather needle and matching or contrasting thread. Alternatively, contact cement (leather glue) can be used for patches on areas that will not flex repeatedly. We produce our patches with the backing type you specify — always order sew-on for leather applications.

Denim jackets are the ideal canvas for iron-on patches. Set your iron to the cotton or high heat setting (around 360-380°F), place the patch adhesive-side down on the denim, cover with a pressing cloth, and apply firm downward pressure for 30-60 seconds without moving the iron. Allow to cool fully before touching. For long-term durability, adding a perimeter stitch around the patch edge significantly improves resistance to washing and wear.

Back panels for large statement patches range from 10-14 inches wide. Chest patches (left breast area) are typically 3-5 inches for a crest or logo shape. Sleeve patches range from 3-4 inches. Large back patches require careful attachment — sew-on for leather and denim, iron-on only for denim with a full perimeter sew reinforcement afterward for garments that will be worn regularly.
