Standard PVC base thickness is 2.5 mm, with a 3 mm base available on request. Raised detail is added in 0.5 mm layers, up to five, so a finished patch is about 5 mm on the standard base and up to 5.5 mm on the 3 mm base, depending on the design. What changes between 2D and 3D is how the design sits on top of the base, and that is set by the mould, so it is the first decision on a PVC order.
2D PVC: flat, stepped levels
A 2D mould builds the design in flat levels, each 0.5 mm higher than the one below, with crisp vertical steps between them. Because every level is flat, 2D holds the thinnest lines and the smallest detail PVC can carry: text down to about 3 mm tall and lines down to about 1 mm. Choose 2D for logos with lettering, badges with a lot of small type, and anything that has to read clearly at a glance.
3D PVC: sculpted relief
A 3D mould sculpts rounded slopes instead of flat steps, so faces, animals, mascots and emblems stand off the base like a relief, up to about 5 mm thick in total. Rounded slopes narrow toward the top, so fine elements soften and need to be broader than they would in 2D. Choose 3D for one strong central shape.
Most designs mix the two: small text and borders stay on the flat 2D levels, and 3D is kept for the larger shape in the middle. Your mockup shows which parts are which before the mould is cut.
What PVC patches are used for
PVC patches for hats
A PVC patch is soft rubber, so it bends with the curve of a cap front instead of sitting on it like a board. Keep hat designs simple and bold: a short wordmark or a single logo reads from across a room, while lettering under about 3 mm tall fills in. A sew-on back, stitched through the sewing channel around the edge, is the most permanent way to put one on a cap, and a 2D build keeps text sharp on a small front panel. PVC morale patches
Morale patches are where 3D PVC earns its place: a character, a skull or a slogan moulded in raised layers stands out on a plate carrier or a pack in a way flat thread does not. Most are ordered with hook backing, and the loop piece comes with them, so the patch can be swapped between pieces of kit. Each colour is its own pour, so a morale patch has solid, separated colours rather than shading. Orders start at 5 pieces, which suits a small team or a one-off design. Tactical and Velcro PVC patches
On tactical gear the patch has to survive rain, mud and being pulled on and off. PVC is colorfast and waterproof in normal outdoor use, and hook backing is bonded to the back of the patch after it comes out of the mould; we check the bond with a pull test before the order ships. The loop piece is supplied, so the patch fits any loop panel or can be sewn onto gear that has none. Name tapes, flags, blood-type and unit IDs are typical tactical PVC patches. PVC patches for military and police
Units, departments and teams order PVC for gear that lives outdoors: packs, vests, helmets and bags. Subdued two-colour designs and full-colour crests are both straightforward in PVC, because colour is poured in solid zones, up to 8 per design included. The mould is kept on file, so a unit that reorders the same patch next year runs from the same mould with no setup charge. Uniform shoulders usually stay embroidered; PVC is the choice for equipment. PVC logo patches for brands
Brands use PVC for a logo that has to look consistent on every piece: bags, outerwear, gear and merchandise. A moulded logo has clean edges, colours matched to your Pantone references and confirmed at approval, and the mould is kept for reorders; for colour-critical repeats, agree a reference sample. A logo with a tagline usually works best as a 2D build so the small text stays legible; a bold mark can be 3D. Sizes run from 0.5 in up to 8 in as standard. Outdoor, hunting and fishing PVC patches
Hunting, fishing and outdoor brands choose PVC because the patch goes where the gear goes: on a wet jacket, a tackle bag or a cooler. PVC is colorfast and waterproof in normal outdoor use. Fish, antlers and animal heads are natural 3D subjects, with the brand name kept flat on a 2D level beneath them. How to attach a PVC patch
The backing is chosen on the order and attached on our floor after the patch is demoulded. Here is how each one goes on once the patches reach you.
Iron-on (heat-seal): press from the back only
- Follow the application instructions supplied with your order. They are written for the adhesive on your patches.
- Tape the patch in place on the front of the garment, then turn the garment inside out.
- Our production chart presses PVC on a heat press at 320°F (160°C) from the back of the fabric, behind the patch, for 25–30 seconds with medium pressure, under a silicone pad.
- Never put heat on the moulded rubber face: it is the adhesive film on the back that bonds.
The garment must tolerate that heat. A household iron does not hold a set temperature, and leather or coated fabrics may not take heat at all; sew-on or hook backing is the safer choice there.
Hook and loop (Velcro)
The hook side is bonded to the back of the patch; the loop piece is supplied with it. On gear that already has a loop panel, press the patch on and it is done. On anything else, sew the loop piece to the garment or bag first, then attach the patch, and it can be moved or replaced as often as you like.
Sew-on
A sew-on PVC patch has a plain back with a sewing channel moulded around the edge. Stitch through the channel, not the raised design; the channel keeps the stitches neat and off the face of the patch. Sew-on is the most permanent option.

PVC patches with no separate mould fee
Every PVC design needs its own mould cut before production. There is no separate mould fee at any quantity, which is what lets a PVC run start at 5 pieces per design, the same as every other type. An unchanged reorder runs from the mould on file with no setup charge; a change that needs a new or modified mould is quoted and approved before work starts.

PVC patches over 5 inches are priced by their longest side, because the mould is made to that length. At 5 inches and under, PVC is priced like every other material, on the average of width and height. For example, a 6 × 2 inch PVC patch is priced as a 6 inch patch, and a 5 × 2 inch one as a 4 inch patch. This rule applies from 26 October 2026; a quote you already hold keeps its price while its link is live.

Standard PVC production is 12–14 business days from the moment you approve your digital mockup, not from when you order or pay, and shipping time is on top: US express transit is 4–5 business days. Rush PVC production is 5–8 business days, confirmed in writing for each order, at 25% of the patch subtotal (backing, 3D and glow included) with a $50 minimum. We confirm the rush date before accepting the service; if we cannot meet your requested date, we offer an alternative, and if we miss a confirmed date, the rush fee is refunded under our rush policy. PVC takes longer than thread because every design gets its own mould. The mockup included with your order arrives within 12-24 hours, and production only begins after your written approval. Orders of 500 or more per design include a free physical pre-production sample, made after full payment and shipped for your approval before the bulk run. Physical sampling adds approximately eight business days for sample receipt, on top of the standard 12–14 business day production window, and we confirm the schedule in writing for each order. Rush orders can waive the sample in writing to keep the delivery date.
