Stitch Count Calculator
Estimate how many stitches a design will run from its size, coverage and detail level — or drop in a real DST or PES file below for an exact count instead of an estimate. Either way, see the patch price at every quantity we offer.
This calculator runs on a real production floor, not a generic industry rule of thumb: we measured a 3″×3″ embroidered patch at 100% coverage at 20,000–24,000 stitches — 2,200–2,700 stitches per square inch — on 17 Sept 2026, and that's the density this estimate scales from at any size. Three things move the count from there: coverage (a 50%-fill design has roughly half the stitches of the same design at 100%), detail level (fine text and many colours add stitches beyond raw area, since each direction change and colour stop costs something), and, obviously, size itself, which the count scales with directly.
Stitch count doesn't change our price directly — unlike some suppliers who charge per 1,000 stitches, we price by patch size and quantity, so a highly detailed design costs the same as a simple one at the same size and order size. What stitch count tells you instead is production complexity: roughly how long the design takes to run and how much thread it uses, useful context to include on a quote even though it isn't what sets the number.

Stitch count questions
- How many stitches are in a 3 inch patch?
- It depends entirely on how much of the patch is filled and how detailed the artwork is, not just its size — a simple bold logo at 3 inches with light coverage might run a few thousand stitches, while a detailed design fully filled at the same size can run well over ten thousand. Enter your size, coverage and detail level above for a range, or upload a real file for an exact count.
- Is this an exact stitch count?
- Only when you upload a real DST or PES file — then it is a direct count of the file's own stitch records, not an estimate. Without a file, the calculator gives a range based on a commonly used digitizing rule of thumb, which is a starting point for budgeting, not a quote.
- Does stitch count change the price?
- Not directly — our pricing is by patch size and quantity, not by stitch count. What stitch count tells you is how complex the design is and roughly how long it takes to run, which is useful context on a quote request even though it does not change the number on it.
- How many stitches are in a 4 inch patch?
- At our measured floor of 2,200–2,700 stitches per square inch at full coverage, a 4″×4″ patch (16 sq in) runs roughly 35,000–43,000 stitches fully filled, less at lower coverage. Use the calculator above with your own coverage and detail level for a tighter range, or upload a file for the exact count.
- What is a good stitch count for a hat patch?
- Whatever the design actually needs at the size you're stitching — there's no target number to hit. Hat patches usually run 2–3 inches, which at full coverage lands around 9,000–24,000 stitches depending on detail. Going bigger or more detailed than the hat needs just adds run time and stiffness for no visual benefit.
- Does more stitches mean better quality?
- No — it usually means more coverage or more detail, not better craftsmanship. A clean, well-digitized design with the right amount of fill looks better than an over-stitched one, which can actually run stiffer and curl the fabric. More stitches is a cost and time signal, not a quality signal.
- How do I reduce stitch count?
- Drop the coverage from 100% to 75% or 50% where the design allows it (partial fill still reads clearly on most logos), simplify fine text or thin linework, and reduce the number of colour changes — each one adds a stop, not just the stitches around it. Our digitizing team can also re-digitize an existing design to run leaner without changing how it looks.
