Custom Name Patches Guide: Sizes, Backing Options, and 2026 Pricing

Sizes, backing methods, and real 2026 pricing for custom name patches. Used for work uniforms, jackets, scouts, sports rosters, and military name tapes. Orders from 5 pieces.
Key Takeaways
- Standard custom name patch size is 4 inches wide by 1 inch tall for work uniforms, jackets, and chest placement; 5 inches by 1 inch for military name tapes per AR 670-1; 2 to 3 inches wide for hats and bags.
- Name patches accept iron-on, sew-on, velcro, or adhesive backing at no extra charge. Sew-on is recommended for uniforms washed weekly; iron-on works for casual jackets and bags; velcro for swappable patches across multiple uniforms.
- Embroidered name patches start at $1.18 per piece at 500 quantity for a 4 by 1 inch size. Bulk team orders with different names cost no extra: each unique name is treated as the same SKU at the same per-piece price.
- Available from Panda Patches with orders from 5 pieces, free digital mockup within 24 hours, free US shipping, and no setup fees.
Custom name patches turn a generic uniform, jacket, or bag into something personal. Coaches use them on team warm-ups. Boy Scout troops use them on uniform shirts. Auto shops put them on coveralls. Parents stitch them onto kids backpacks so the lost-and-found bin doesn't swallow another lunchbox. This guide covers every standard size by use case, every backing option, real 2026 pricing from our calculator, and the distinction between a name patch and a military name tape (different rules apply).
What Are Custom Name Patches Used For?
Name patches show up in six common contexts, each with its own size and backing convention:
Work uniforms and coveralls. Mechanics, plumbers, HVAC techs, electricians, delivery drivers, hospitality staff. The patch goes over the right or left chest pocket and identifies the employee for customers. Typically 4 x 1 inch or a 4 x 1.5 inch oval, sewn on, with the first name only or first name plus last initial.
Sports team rosters. Hockey, baseball, soccer, football, lacrosse, basketball jerseys, and warm-up jackets. Last name across the upper back (varies 11 to 14 inches wide), or smaller name patches on the front for tournament gear. Most leagues require specific font and size, so check league rules first.
Scout and youth uniforms. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Camp Fire, 4-H clubs. Name patches sit above the right chest pocket, typically 4 x 1 inch with last name only per BSA convention.
Military name tapes. A separate spec entirely. AR 670-1 requires 5 x 1 inch tape, letters 3/4 inch high, in black block letters with velcro or sew-on backing on OCP uniforms. See the dedicated section below.
Personalized jackets and bags. Letterman jackets, denim jackets, leather vests, school backpacks, kids' luggage. Sizes range from 3.5 x 1 inch for chest placement up to 11 inches for the back of an adult jacket.
Hats, caps, and dog harnesses. Smaller 2 to 3 inch name patches on the front panel of a cap, or 2 x 1 inch on a service dog harness vest. Velcro backing is the standard for dog gear so the patch can be swapped between vests.
What Size Should a Custom Name Patch Be?
Size depends entirely on where the patch goes. Use this chart as a starting point, then confirm with your league, uniform supplier, or chain of command if you compete or serve.
| Use Case | Standard Size | Backing |
|---|---|---|
| Work uniform chest pocket | 4 x 1 inch (rectangular or oval) | Sew-on |
| Coverall / mechanic shop | 4.5 x 1.5 inch oval | Sew-on |
| Military name tape (AR 670-1) | 5 x 1 inch, 3/4 inch letters | Velcro or sew-on |
| Boy/Girl/Cub Scout uniform | 4 x 1 inch above pocket | Sew-on (iron-on tolerated) |
| Sports jersey back name | 11 to 14 inches wide | Twill cut-and-sew |
| Letterman / chest patch | 3.5 to 4 inches wide | Sew-on |
| Hat / cap front | 2 to 3 inches wide | Iron-on or sew-on |
| Backpack / luggage tag | 2 to 3 inches | Iron-on or sew-on |
| Service dog harness vest | 2 x 1 inch | Velcro |
| Kids jacket back | 9 to 11 inches | Iron-on |
Standard custom name patch sizes by use case
If you're unsure, measure the spot with a tape measure or paper template before ordering. Going one size up is almost always a safer mistake than going one size down because Panda Patches produces every patch to your exact spec at no upcharge, and a 4 inch name patch on a 4.5 inch space looks proportional while a 3 inch patch on the same space looks lost.
What's the Difference Between a Name Patch and a Name Tape?
Name patch is the general term. Any custom-made identifier carrying a person's name, in any size, font, color, or shape. Civilian use, sports, scouts, work uniforms, personalized merchandise.
Name tape is the military-specific term and a specific spec. Per AR 670-1 Chapter 21-25, an Army name tape must be exactly 5 inches long by 1 inch tall, with letters 3/4 inch high (1/2 inch high in Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed if the last name is 11 or more letters), in black block letters on the appropriate OCP or background. No punctuation, symbols, or special characters. Worn above the right chest pocket on the duty uniform. Velcro or sew-on backing only. Iron-on is not authorized.
If you're ordering for the Army, Air Force, or any branch that follows AR 670-1, you need a name tape and the dimensions are fixed by regulation. If you're ordering for anything else (a coach, a coverall, a kid's backpack, a band jacket), you need a name patch and you have full freedom on size, color, font, and backing. Panda Patches produces both, but we'll spec the order to whichever standard applies to your use case.
Can You Iron On a Name Patch?
Yes, with three caveats:
Fabric must tolerate heat. Iron-on adhesive activates at around 270 to 320 F. Cotton, denim, and most polyester blends accept iron-on patches cleanly. Nylon, vinyl, leather, neoprene, and waterproof tactical fabrics melt or scorch at iron temperature. Use sew-on, velcro, or adhesive backing for those instead.
Wash frequency matters. Iron-on adhesive softens after 25 to 30 wash cycles in a hot dryer. Work uniforms washed weekly will start lifting at the corners after about 6 months. For uniforms that go through the wash that often, iron the patch on for placement, then sew a border around it. Iron alone is fine for jackets, backpacks, hats, and anything washed less than monthly.
Military uniforms are an exception. Iron-on is not authorized for AR 670-1 name tapes. Use velcro (most common for OCP) or sew-on only.
Every Panda Patches order includes a choice of sew-on, iron-on, velcro, or adhesive backing at no extra cost. Pick the one that matches your fabric and wash frequency.
How Much Do Custom Name Patches Cost in 2026?
Pricing is the same as our standard custom embroidered patches, calculated by the average dimension. A 4 x 1 inch name patch sizes out as a 3 inch patch in our calculator (the average of 4 and 1, rounded up). Here are real prices from our calculator at common name patch quantities:
| Quantity | Per Piece | Order Total |
|---|---|---|
| 10 pieces | $13.07/pc | $130.70 |
| 25 pieces | $5.87/pc | $146.85 |
| 50 pieces | $3.92/pc | $195.80 |
| 100 pieces | $2.55/pc | $255.20 |
| 500 pieces | $1.18/pc | $588.50 |
Custom embroidered name patch pricing (4 x 1 inch)
Bulk orders with different names (a sports roster, a scout troop, a work crew) cost the same per piece as a single-name order. Each unique name is treated as the same SKU at the same volume price. A 20-player hockey team with 20 different name patches at 4 x 1 inch runs about $5.87 per piece, $117.40 total.
All orders include free US shipping, free digital mockup within 24 hours, unlimited free revisions, and no setup, mold, or digitizing fees. Get an instant quote on the embroidered patches page or view all patch packages.
How Do You Order Custom Name Patches With Multiple Different Names?
This is the most common name patch order: a team, a troop, a crew where each patch needs a different name but the design, font, size, and color stay the same. The process is straightforward.
1. Send the design and the list of names. A spreadsheet, a text file, or a screenshot of your roster works. Include the spelling exactly as you want it on each patch (capitalization, hyphens, apostrophes).
2. We send a digital mockup showing every name. You see each patch laid out in a grid before production. Catch typos here. Unlimited free revisions until every name is correct.
3. Approve, we produce. Standard production is 7 to 14 business days. We ship the patches grouped by name in clear plastic sleeves so your equipment manager or troop leader doesn't have to sort them by hand.
No extra setup or design fees for variable names. The fee structure treats your 20 different names as a single order of 20 patches at the same volume price.
How Fast Can You Get Custom Name Patches?
Standard production runs 7 to 14 business days after digital mockup approval, plus 3 to 5 days shipping. About 2 to 3 weeks from order to door.
24-hour rush production is available on qualifying orders. Best for tight deadlines like a team photo day, a uniform inspection, or a season opener.
For multi-name orders (rosters, troops), give us at least 3 weeks. Variable names take slightly longer in the mockup phase because you need to verify spelling on each line.
How Do You Order Custom Name Patches from Panda Patches?
1. Submit your design and name list. Upload a logo or template (AI, EPS, PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG) or describe what you want. Include name spellings, font preference, color, and size. No artwork? Our design team creates the template at no charge.
2. Free mockup within 24 hours. We email you a digital mockup showing every name laid out exactly as it will appear on the finished patch.
3. Request changes — unlimited, free. Fix typos, adjust fonts, swap colors. We don't start production until you approve every name.
4. Approve and we produce. Standard delivery is 7 to 14 business days. 24-hour rush available for urgent deadlines.
5. Free US shipping to your door with full tracking. Money-back guarantee.
